:: propagandART ~ august 2, 2004 ::

thanks to those who came out to the nine live cats gig last friday.
i had a blast...hope you did too.

there're some great events coming up this weekend!
so call some close friends and head out for some fun.

:: Hedwig and the Angry Inch ::

This is the most difficult role I've ever undertaken. And I mean that on so very many levels. I would feel very grateful to have as many friendly faces in the audience as possible. This should sell out, so get your tickets ahead of time and get there early to get a good seat. Also, I'm having a party after the show on Saturday the 7th...so come to the show then back to my place afterwards!

Here's our "official" blurb:
Hedwig And The Angry Inch was written for the stage by John Cameron Mitchel and Steven Trask, and first performed in 1997. Since then it has become a off-Broadway sensation. In 2001 it was made into a movie that became an instant classic alongside "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."

Hedwig is the story of a young man named Hansel living in Communist East Berlin in the middle late Eighties, who meets an American G.I. named Luther. Luther offers to marry Hansel and take him to America, but to get out of Berlin, Hansel (who will take his mother's name, Hedwig) must leave a little part of himself behind. The operation works to get Hedwig out of East Berlin and into America, but it is not a success. She is left with something in between. The show is full of tales of Hedwig's life and love and a shit-ton of great rock and roll songs. I hope you buy a ticket and see the show. We have been working very hard and it's going to be fantastic. Tickets for all shows are $10.00 and on sale now only at Duffy's Tavern!

Even though they're competing with my party, I still have to recommend these guys...
They play a great concotion of party music. They've taken a rest this summer,
so I'm sure they're reinvigorated and ready to tear the place up.

:: Seussical: The Musical ::

"After all those years being stuck on a page,
Did you ever imagine you’d see me onstage?
Now I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue!
No, there’s no telling what!
But I’ll give you a clue..."

So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Once On This Island, Ragtime) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and all of the Whos of Whoville!

These classic, colorful tales are seamlessly brought together by Jojo, a young “thinker of strange and wonderful thinks”! As each story unfolds you will marvel at how relevant and profound Seuss’s subtle themes are, making this a musical that appeals to all ages.

The score emerges as a Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk! So let your toes tap, your fingers snap, and your imagination run wild!

"If you open your mind,
Oh, the thinks you will find
Lining up to get loose!
Oh, the thinks you can think!
Oh, the thinks you can think
When you think about Seuss!!"

:: Amoree Lovell ::

Tuesday, August 3, former Nebraskan (now from Portland, Oregon) Amoree Lovell will be bringing her incredible Scott Joplin-meets-Bauhaus sexy piano style to Knickerbockers. She plays and sings like a demon, and after playing multiple shows every month in Portland, she should be in top form. Really amazing stuff, and one of those musicians who is just a joy to watch as she makes it look really easy.

Also, Lincoln's own Thomas Irvin will be performing. He's leaving for Cleveland soon, and this may actually be his last gig...I'm not sure. In any case, there aren't many opportunities to catch him before he leaves.

:: Midwest Dilemma ::

Is it something in the water or maybe the weather? Omaha, NE based band Midwest Dilemma will take their roots rock sound to Lincoln for the first time with all new members. They will be performing Friday, August 6th at Duggan's Pub, located at 440 S. 11th Street in Lincoln. The show will start at 9pm with local favorites Common Jones. There will be a $4 cover and Midwest Dilemma will take the stage around 10:30pm and the Maelee Whitman band from Minneapolis rounding off the night.

Midwest Dilemma has shared the stage with national acts such as Jesse Malin, Kathleen Edwards, Roger Clyne and Kory & the Fireflies. The duo can be described as emotionally charged and singer/songwriter driven. Midwest Dilemma originated as an outgrowth of Omaha singer/songwriter Justin Lamoureux, making his mark in the community with powerful lyrics and performances. Lamoureux draws his lyrics from life experiences and situations, hitting home to many listeners. Justin is backed by the sweet melodic vocal harmonies of Jennie Lee who packs an equal punch of her own. Let the music speak for itself, Midwest Dilemma doesn't leave much out, emotion or vocal style.
